This article, printed in the Lansing State Journal, talks about making the switch from briefcase to backpack for business or day to day travels. Writer Jason Sheeler makes a good point- it’ll leave you hands free for texting, emailing and holding a morning dose of ‘joe. No matter how annoying the tech-ing on the go may seem, the truth is a commute to work or even a ride on the elevator is precious time. Nowadays, you can work from anywhere and having your hands free is key.
So, in keeping with this idea, we present a few backpack options for men (and ladies too!). And with back to school season kicking off this month, even if you’re not heading back into the classroom, you’ll still find plenty of deals on all of our backpacks!
The Big Ben Laptop Back with Fast Pass from Victorinox gives you all the features of a briefcase, as well TSA friendly design. The laptop compartment’s book-style opening allows you to simply unzip and leave your notebook attached to the bag during TSA screening.

The David King Leather Jumbo Backpack boasts a classic look, soft leather and total function at a great price. Available in three colors, it’s the kind of bag that gets better looking with age….and who doesn’t love that notion?

The dash of color on the outside and pop-out-at-you lining sets the Briggs & Riley Glide Backpack apart from other basic black business backpacks. With tons of organization, including a compartment that will hold a 15 inch laptop, this pack offers style and the excellent performance Briggs & Riley is known for.

The Tumi T-Tech Adventure Covertible Computer Messenger Backpack has two easy carrying options. Wear it on the back or across the body for hands-free traveling with briefcase function. Probably not, but it is pretty cool, and dare I say- functional? Karl Lagerfeld, head designer for Chanel, debuted this clever take on a woman’s briefcase to accompany his power suit theme that hit runways in Paris this week. Featuring a dedicated compartment for just about everything (including a Chanel purse), this clear acryllic case isn’t likely to appear on the market anytime soon.

No frequent business traveler would be caught dead without the right business luggage. The right bag can make the trip a truly productive and enjoyable experience. (minus the hassle of airport security and the airlines) Let’s look at the options for the corporate road warrior as they are very different than the typical vacation traveler.
The Briefcase
The briefcase is slowly dying as the standard business travel accessory, but some tried and true travelers still carry them. If you do not carry a laptop, or have switched to a netbook for your computing needs, a briefcase may be the way to go. Manufacturers like Samsonite and Kenneth Cole still carry a nice selection of briefcases with modern style and functionality.
The Laptop Bag
For those of you with a laptop, your choices are many. To just protect your laptop, you can use a laptop sleeve or a small laptop bag. The newest trend is laptop messenger bags which can be thrown over the shoulder for easy carry through the airport. They can be had in leather or various other fabrics in a wide variety of colors.
If you want to eliminate checking bags, then a wheeled overnight laptop bag is the ticket for you. These bags have ample room for your laptop and 1 - 3 days worth of clothing. Make sure to check carry-on sizes before shopping for this style of bag.

This Knomo laptop bag is perfect for my travels to and from graduate school. I don’t carry more than 2 books at a time, a notebook, my laptop and my agenda and they all fit perfectly into my stylish, functional Knomo bag. It’s by far my favorite school bag that I have ever carried! I will even carry it to work occasionally.
Perfect For (whom/what):
This Knomo quilted laptop bag is perfect for grad school students or the everyday business woman who wants a fun but functional bag. It comes in many great colors too! The Una tote is more of a casual bag, but it can still be professional as well. It is perfect for that college graduate who is just starting out their career, or for the woman that wants an everyday business tote with the option of carrying a laptop. Without all your items in the bag, it’s pretty lightweight, which I know is important to a lot of women.
Favorite Feature:
My favorite feature is the organization on the inside. The lining is bright pink so you can find everything easily. Also there are two zip pockets which help you hide things you don’t want noticeable. There are other fitted pockets, for items like pens, pencils, calculators, sticky-note pads, a small notebook for assignments, your to-do-list, keys, etc.
Drawbacks:
The only drawback that I feel this bag has is [Read more →]
